Retailers Blame June Rains for Weak Sales

7/11/2009 7:05:05 AM  |  By J K Galvez

June Sales go down 10 to 20 percent due to heavy rains

Summary: An official of the East Broadway Merchants Association said that heavy rains have caused severe blow to the retail sales in June, adding that hampering job loss over the past few months also slowed down sales rate.

A recent data showed that retail sales in June have plummeted 10 to 20 percent as retailers expressed fear that it will continue its downward spiral due to heavy rains in the coming weeks.

In a statement, East Broadway Merchants Association President Marci Rasmussen said that rains bring good news as it helps removes the summer heat away. However, he said that the rains also drove away most of their clients making their sales drop by as much as 20 percent.

“When its raining people usually don’t come out,” he added.

Salt Lake City’s East Broadway Avenue is home to some 23 members of the retail association. It is also known for its pedestrian-friendly stores such as flower and coffee shops.

The increasing job losses in the US and the extent of the rainy days have shortened retailers’ seasonal sales. Regular customers who usually buy summer dresses and other season’s outfit ought to back out from buying and look forward to the next season’s trends.

“People are thinking and looking forward more in back-to-school season,” Rasmussen said.

As retailers, in same store category, reported weak sales on Thursday, mall-based stores especially in the clothing industry have been hit the hardest with June sales falling to a record low.
