Internet Giant Defends Pending Book Deal with Publishers and Authors at Congress

Summary: Internet giant Google defended its stand over the pending book deal with publishers and authors at the US Congress' House Judiciary Committee, saying that the sale of out-of-print titles in the online market can help preserve the American history and literary culture.

Internet giant Google Inc. on Thursday defended its pending settlement case with various publishers and authors during a hearing at the House Judiciary Committee, stressing that the deal for the books are a very important part of American literary history and culture.

In its argument, the online search giant said that the e-books would allow Internet users to buy and read copyrighted books that are already out of print in the US. Google also argued that the sale of the said books in the online community would allow publishers and authors to market their masterpieces.

The US District Court of the Southern District of New York needs to approve the settlement case before Google could be allowed to sell the books in its online store. The court also needs to ensure that the sale would not impose a negative impact on the $25-billion book market.

But Google pointed that the negative impact on the book retail industry would be at the very minimum, saying that majority of the titles being sold in the online community are no longer available in print and has low commercial demand.

“The out-of-print titles would have a minimal impact on the book retail market and it’s the yet-to-be-published and the newest titles that usually drives the commerce for the digital or e-book market,” Google chief legal counsel David Drummond explained.
