Despite Questionable Mileage Capacity, Nissan's Leaf could beat Toyota's Prius

Summary: Despite inability to go more than 100 miles without recharging for a long period of time, Nissan executives expressed strong believe that their all-electric car called Leaf could sell more units that its competitors.

They added that with the release of the zero-emission vehicles, they could get some 10 percent of the market within the next six years.

Nissan North American Vice President for Product Planning Larry Dominique on Thursday expressed strong belief that the new all-electric, zero-emission Leaf could outsell its competitor, the Toyota Prius despite its inability to drive for more than 100 miles without recharging.

In a statement, Dominique said that the low mileage capacity of the new Lead is only a minor glitch in its design compared to the positive benefits it could give to the customers. The zero-emission vehicle, according to the senior official, can save people more money while helping save the environment.

He also said that Hybrids, unlike all-electric vehicles, simple won’t get people to the point of not contributing to environmental population, saying that hybrids still uses fuels that could be harmful to the earth.

“Yes, they have an extended range, but in the mass market appeal and upfront cost category, these hybrids simply won’t make it,” he said.

Based on records, some two percent of the car market was accounted to hybrid vehicles. But Dominique said that with the release of the all-electric cars in 2010, it could bite more than 10 percent of the market share within the next six to ten years.

The Leaf costs around $25,000 to $33,000 while Toyota’s Prius, which is a plug-in hybrid, cost $20,000.
