How to Start an Online Bakery

If you want to start your own bakery, it would be best to focus on running an online store. It is possible to ship perishable goods and you can find the needed information from the local post office.

Decide in the goods that you want to sell and work hard on your website.

Starting an Online Bakery

Do you love to cook or bake goodies? If you do, you can put your skills to good use by starting your own online bakery. Perhaps you’re wondering why focus on online selling when you can simply deliver the baked goods to local stores. Well, delivery to local stores can be time-consuming and exhausting. To cut down the costs and the tasks, online is a great choice. Besides, a lot of people love shopping online these days.

The first that you need to decide on is whether you will have the bakery at home or in a small kitchen that you can rent out. It’s better to start with a home-based business to lessen the overheads but one problem that you can encounter is with the zoning laws. Since you live in a residential area, it would not be possible to run a bakery from home unless you talk or meet with the zoning officials. At times, you will only be required to pay a certain fee to re-zone the place of business. Well of course, the laws or procedures may vary from place to place but it pays to stick with the law.

Licensing, Website, Etc.

The business license should also be settled prior to opening. Even if you’re going to run an online bakery, there are still licenses that you should obtain. A domestic kitchen for a bakery is subject to the requirements of the Department of Agriculture. After passing the test, you can receive the license. This will allow you to learn the basics of proper labeling and weighing. While you’re studying for the exams, you can now work on your online bakery website. You have two options – create a site from scratch or use websites like eBay and Etsy to start an online store.

Another thing that you have to consider is the shipping since you’re dealing with perishable goods. Talk with the local post office and see if you can arrange for priority mail shipments. If you’re lucky, you can ship to different states in the US and even other countries. Decide on the items that you want to make and purchase the supplies. Take photos of the goods that you want to sell and upload it to your store. Don’t forget to provide for descriptions as well. Now, you have to prepare the right amount so that you will not be wasting your supplies and effort. When you’ve posted all the photos of the products you’re selling, you can now bake per order.

With having an online bakery...how will the customer receive their products? Do you ship, deliver or pickup? If you are shipping your product what is the most effective way to do so without damaging the goods?
