How to Start a Turtle Farm

Turtle farm has been considered as a business which is very lucrative but with many rules and regulations to fulfill.

Aside from that, there are a lot of things that you must know first in order for you to start your own in a proper and right way.

For a very long time now, turtle farming as a commercial operation has not been in any topic of a newspaper or magazines or in any television shows. These are mainly because of several certain requirements as well as regulations which one must fulfill first before he or she can operate in the United States a turtle farm. Health concerns, profitability, and conservation have oftentimes resulted in an ongoing long discussion about turtle farming in different methods and forms.

What There Is To Know About Turtle Farming?

If you are planning to start a turtle farm and you are looking on how to start one, here is some essential information that will definitely help you to establish one. The turtle farming operation started during the year 1940. Later, in the 1970’s year, salmonella has been discovered and found in baby turtles having shells of 4 inches long and below. After five years have passed, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned the national sale of these baby turtles having shells of below 4 inches long. Their main reason for banning it is that regarding salmonella issues.

What Is Turtle Farming?

It is important to know first what turtle farming is before you can start your own. Having enough knowledge of its fundamental factors and particulars is essential in order for it to not fail. First of all, turtle farm is where numerous turtles are being cared for and grown for the sole purpose of selling it either as a pert to pet suppliers, or food and export. More specifically, a sum of twenty-six different types of turtles is being taken care of and being farmed. The most popular and common turtle that is used and farmed is the Red Eared Turtle. Usually, more than 15 million turtles are annually harvested.

If you are in the United States, it would be favorable to you to start your own farm since it is being regulated there, unlike to other states where it is not allowed. If that will be the case for you, visit your local government and asked if you can operate a turtle farm first before you buy any things necessary for farming turtles. Several domestic farms of this kind are operating in southern parts of the United States. There are also turtle farms in northern parts such as Maryland. These turtles are typically exported to several parts of the world. This includes China, Mexico, and Japan.

Furthermore, if you are going to build a turtle farm, you must acquire licenses and permits to operate it. These required licenses and permits are governed and regulated by state agencies. Moreover, many state licenses usually follow the laws of wildlife conservation and FDA guidelines.
