Rhubarb Farming is Easy

Do you love gardens? If you do, then you probably have your own family garden. One of the great additions is rhubarb. Rhubarb is quite known for its nutritional value and flavor. This plant is considered a perennial and so you can expect them to come back every year as long as you properly care for them. If you are producing more than enough for your family’s needs, you can also sell the rhubarb to local eateries or restaurants. Rhubarb originated from eastern Asia but you can find it in many home gardens in the United States.

If you want to grow and produce much rhubarb, you will have to make garden plots. This is necessary to ensure that the plant herbaceous perennial is not disturbed. You can also have other plants aside from rhubarb and you plant them on the garden sides. Rhubarb farming is not suitable for countries in the southern regions but it is best grown in places where there are moist or cool summers and winter that freezes the ground several inches deep. You should be familiar with the different rhubarb varieties including Victoria, Mac Donald, Valentine, Ruby, Strawberry, and Linneas.

Rhubarb Farming and the Varieties

For those who want to sell large green stalks, you can plant the Victoria variety but if you prefer red stalks, you can go for the Valentine and Mac Donald varieties. A less vigorous red stalk variety is the Strawberry and Ruby while Linneas is the standard rhubarb variety. To grow healthy rhubarb, you will need a fertile and well drained soil. Application of adequate manure will also ensure healthier plants. A plant can last for a year under favorable conditions. Pick a strong bud with a root and its best planted during spring. Rhubarb farming is really easy as long as you know some basics.

It will take some time before you can harvest rhubarb. In rhubarb farming, harvesting is possible after two years. Plant the root at least 8 to 10 inches deep and cover it with soil when you see stalks appearing, pull in the soil so that the plant is only covered with soil around 3-4 inches deep. After a year, you will need to apply manure or a complete fertilizer. There is no need to worry because rhubarb is not over-fertilized easily. You can harvest the stems of rhubarb after 2 years and on the third year you can now harvest leaf stalks. During winter, it is also possible to grow rhubarb but only in pots! You will surely earn more profits if your rhubarb plants are very healthy.
