Mexico city: With the imminent global health crisis imminent cause by swine flu, the government announced a five-day shutdown of its economy in an effort to prevent the spread of this highly contagious disease.

After warnings from the World Health Organization (WHO) that the swine flu may spread as a pandemic disease, President Felipe Calderon urged people to stay in their homes. Few days ago, several schools in the country postponed classes while some offices and establishments closed amid flu scare.

In a televised statement, the Calderon said that home is a safer place to stay to avoid getting the flu virus.

Last week, the swine flu crisis erupted in the county and has now killed 176 people in Mexico alone. Meanwhile, the virus has been reported to reach several countries including the US which has already confirmed cases of this contagious disease.

According to WHO, the flu alert level has reached phase 5 which is the last stage before it will consider that the swine virus is pandemic or a global health crisis.
