Internet Giant Offers Concession to Book Authors and Publishers in Europe

Summary: Internet giant Google Inc offered a concession to book authors and publishers in Europe over out-of-print titles in the US, saying that the group should join the company in its Book Registry board to see what titles are still available in the continent that could not be sold in the online marketplace for e-books.

Internet giant Google Inc on Friday said that it will offer a concession with book authors and publishers in Europe following massive protests in the continent and an ongoing settlement case in the United States.

In a statement, Google said that it will now remove from its Books Registry all out-of-print titles in the US and that are those still offered in Europe.

Likewise, reports said that the internet giant would ask European authors and publishers to join the registry’s broad to be able to see what books are not allowed to be sold in the online market.

Meanwhile, a Microsoft-based competitive online marketplace in Europe dismissed the offers made by Google, saying that the move does not change anything and the common problem remains.

“The ongoing settlement case in the US still leaves a widespread concern in our group. This type of agreement in the court can lead to Google monopolizing the access to digital libraries and sales of e-books all over the world. The decision of the US court can greatly affect the online market as well as the book retail stores, which includes search advertising,” the group said in a statement.

Other concerns being raised include copyright violations in photos inside the books should the court allow Google to digitize the titles.
