Google Buys Gizmo5

Internet Calling Software Maker Will Help Improve Google Voice Application

Summary: Google Inc., the largest online search engine in world, has bought internet calling software maker Gizmo5 in a bid to take over major market shares which is currently being controlled by rival Skype.

Google is lagging behind in its services since it does not offer computer-to-computer voice calling in its Google Voice application.

World’s biggest search engine provider Google Inc on Monday announced the purchase of Internet Calling Software maker Gizmo5 in a bid to improve its Google Voice application that will allow it to compete directly with its bigger rival Skype.

The purchase of Gizmo5 will give Google the much needed boost in its session initiation protocol (SIP), which allows Internet users to make phone calls using IP networks. It will be recalled that the Internet giant has launched the Google Voice application in March, which allows users to make phone calls and accept domestic calls in their computers free of charge.

However, the application still lacks the capability to make computer-to-computer calls. But with the acquisition of Gizmo5, Google is expected to make major improvements in its internet voice services.

On the other hand, group product managers Craig Walker and Wesley Chan decline to give details on the said buyout but stressed that they are certain their team will join Google Voice programmers to create other programs that would give the application much needed improvement.

Google has also decline to answer questions regarding the direct use of Gizmo5 in its company and pointed to the postings by Walker and Chan.
