GM Sees eBay As New Market to Sell New Cars


eBay auctioning To Help GM Turnaround Its Bottomed Sales


Summary: A top official of General Motors Corp. on Friday said that it is planning to auction new and second hand cars on eBay.

The said experiment will cover the expansion plans of the carmaker that will allow the internet marketplace to sell several lines of its vehicles.

 A high-ranking official of the General Motors Corp. said on Friday revealed plans to sell new lines of cars, even second hand vehicles, on eBay. The executive also said that experiment will be part of the expansion plans that will help turnaround company sales in the online marketplace.

In an interview, GM Chief Executive Officer Fritz Henderson said that they are now finalizing the partnership with eBay Inc. He also said that the vehicles will be sold to consumers in the California area using a bidding process, which eBay normally use.


He also said that consumers can choose to buy the vehicles they like as soon as they want to by just clicking on the “Buy it now” options. However, the vehicles in that particular option already have set prices.


The distribution of the vehicles will be handled by authorized GM dealers, Henderson said.


Meanwhile, GM Spokesperson John McDonald said that the partnership will only experimental, adding that new cars along with preowned vehicles from GM will be sold on an existing partnership.


McDonald said that they will be finalizing the deal with eBay and would possibly start the auctioning in the next couple of weeks. He also hopes that the agreement with eBay will bring other GM dealers on board.
