Gap Co-Founder Fisher Losses Battle with Cancer

Popular clothing retail store Gap Inc. co-founder Donald fisher died on Sunday at the age of 81 years old after years of battle with cancer.

Gap Inc. announced the death of Fisher, who co-founded the clothing company with his wife Doris in 1969, through an official statement.

Fisher has championed the art of low-cost clothing retailing. To date, the San Francisco-based company has more than 3, 100 stores all over the world.

The idea of Gap comes from the generational space between young adults and parents.

The company, under the leadership of Fisher, has flourished in the 1970s with Levi’s Jeans as the number seller in all of its outlets. Aside from apparels, Gap also sells records and other clothing names.

Expansion plans has also been made during Fisher’s time, acquiring other names like Banana Republic, Old Navy, Piperlime and Athleta to accommodate all classes.

Fisher has stepped down as the company’s chief executive in 1995 and stepped down as chairman of the board in 2004.

Meanwhile, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has expressed his condolences to the Fisher family, saying that the Gap founder has championed not only the clothing market but also the education and environment.

“He has left a huge impact not only in the lives of people around him but also the American community who has been with him in the growth of the company. He has left his legacy in US education system and the battle for the environment,” Schwarzenegger said.
