Microsoft Losses to Infringement Case Filed by a Canadian Software Company

Summary: US federal court found technology giant Microsoft Corp. guilty of committing patent infringement and asked the company to pay Canadian software firm i4i Ltd $200 million in settlement.

Meanwhile, Microsoft said it will file for an appeal to overturn the court decision, adding that the i4i Ltd accusation is invalid.

Toronto, Canada: After two years of litigation, a US federal court found Microsoft Corp. guilty of committing patent infringement and ordered the technology giant to pay Canadian software company i4i Ltd $200 million in damages.

The court ruling said Microsoft has knowingly committed patent infringement on i4i Ltd’s exclusive rights.

Meanwhile, i4i Ltd’s lawyer Douglas Cawley said the company will petition an injunction order that will prevent Microsoft to use its patent.

In 2007, i4i Ltd charged Microsoft with patent infringement case and accused the US technology giant of infringing its patented document applications which can be found in Microsoft Word programs and Vista Operating System.

When asked for comments, Microsoft spokesman David Bowermaster said the company will file for an appeal to overturn the ruling and said that the court decision and award for damages are legally unsupported.

In a statement, Microsoft said that i4i Ltd accusation of patent infringement is invalid and added that the evidences show that it did not commit any kind of violation in exclusive rights.

Last month, Microsoft was also found guilty of committing patent infringement and asked to pay software firm Uniloc $388 million in damages. Meanwhile, Microsoft said they will file for an appeal to overturn the court’s decision.
